Medem’s titi monkey, Callicebus medemi

Phillip Hershovitz described in 1963 Callicebus torquatus medemi, named after the Colombian zoologist Frederico Medem (born in Latvia) This taxon of the torquatus group is easily distinguished from the other species by its dark appearance and black hands.

Nowadays considered as a species, Medem’s titi monkey is distributed in the Colombian Amazon, between the Ríos Caquetá and Putumayo in the Intendencia del Putumayo and the southern part of the Intendencia de Caquetá. There is a (unpublished) report of its occurence in northern Peru.
